How to learn new things - my studying method

“Make some loading animation demos and send me tomorrow morning. ” My boss said to me. “No problem,” I answered confidently. However, I even did not have After Effect on my computer. I thought maybe that was the time to learn it formally.
I learn something new almost every day, actively or passively. I also know that I will always be in uncertainty. So, I have developed some of my learning methods in these years and want to share them with you.

1, learning new skills

When I was in sophomore year, I decided to take computer science as my minor because I was fascinated by my first website made by clunky CSS and HTML which lead me to find my area. Later, when I decided to apply master's degree, I started to learn Toefl and Gre.
I find the method that works the most is to repeat and practice violently.
Discrete math is a hard class for me. As exam week approached, I still didn't know everything. I tried to consult the professor and my classmates, however, I could not master it in such a short time. Fortunately, our professor gave us a huge stack of exercises that contained every keypoints. So I thought, maybe I will get it when I finished it all. It was time-consuming work but I had no choice. Therefore, I made a plan to dissolve all these papers, I did 3 sets of exercises every day and checked the answer. It would take me nearly 4 hours per day. At first, I left lots of blanks, I copied the answer carefully and managed to understand the logic. Gradually, my speed was up and blanks were fewer. After about finishing 30 sets of exercises, I know the architecture of the question set and the key points of every question, so the answer just came out. In the last couple sets, I can tell which type of questions are a must-tested and which are unimportant. Then, I stopped, I was ready for a test. Just as I assumed, when I got the test paper, I was familiar with all the questions and wrote the answers down quickly. I finished it in 40 minutes and was the first one to hand it in. A few days later, I got a message from my professor, “Have you finished all the sets of exercises?”,I was upset and answered carefully, "yeah, I finished most of the sets, what is going on professor?" "You mastered very well, congratulations!" this was the first time my method worked.
I used the same method when I prepared for Toefl and Gre, practice and repeat violently and they all worked. I am not a very genius type of person, but I have realized insistence and willpower could help me handle most of the work great.

2, Write it down, Speak it out

At my first internship interview, the interviewer asked me  “What do you think design can bring to the company?” That is a simple question, however, I hesitated for a long time before I could speak, I had just read a design book and there were lots of pieces and I can not organize it into a complete and logical answer in such a short time, finally, I said ”eh...Commercial value, I think”  that is it, I am screwed.
I remember the interview so well that I went back and thought about why. I usually listen to the podcast when I am on the road. Some are about design, some just listen for fun. Sometimes I will resonate with some of the sentences and would arouse me thinking, my thoughts would just go far. I'm often lost in thought, why can not I speak something out?
Because it was not be internalized. I thought I knew but actually, I did not. After searching the method on the internet, I started to write it down. The magic happened. when I write it down, I will form many new thoughts and logically organize them, my perception was reinforced and internalized. After speaking it out, my thoughts will be noted again and form something new. Gradually, my knowledge piled up. That is why we should usually review and retrospect, I need enough time to settle and to internalize. Look at things from a distance and you will have a clearer and deeper understanding

3, Interest makes me go further

My mom asked me to pick an instrument when I was a child and I chose piano, it always accompanies me until now. When I graduated high school, I started to learn French due to pure interest. It was very interesting and opened a new world to me. When I got depression, I started to learn dance which made me know a bunch of interesting people and colored my life.
Those are the things that I did not force me to do it and they just come along with me all the time. Interest and passion are always the best motivation.
Those are my experience and I am still exploring. Hoping it can help you too.
